From Garden to Jar: How to Make a Healing Salve with Herbs

At our little apothecary, we sell a healing salve that we make with organic comfrey, yarrow, St. John's wort, calendula, coconut oil, olive oil, lavender, and tea tree. We infuse the herbs in the oil over 6-8 weeks, then strain and double boil with beeswax before adding in lavender and tea tree. Here's how you can make your own:

Ingredients:

  • 1 cup of dried comfrey

  • 1 cup of dried yarrow

  • 1 cup of dried St. John's wort

  • 1 cup of dried calendula

  • 1 cup of coconut oil

  • 1 cup of olive oil

  • 1/2 cup of beeswax

  • 20 drops of lavender essential oil

  • 10 drops of tea tree essential oil

Method:

  1. Combine the dried herbs, coconut oil, and olive oil in a glass jar.

  2. Stir to combine, making sure the herbs are fully coated in oil.

  3. Cover the jar with a lid and place it in a cool, dark place for 6-8 weeks, shaking it daily.

  4. After 6-8 weeks, strain the oil through a cheesecloth or fine mesh strainer.

  5. In a double boiler, melt the beeswax over low heat.

  6. Add the infused oil to the melted beeswax and stir to combine.

  7. Remove from heat and stir in the lavender and tea tree essential oils.

  8. Pour the mixture into small jars or tins and let it cool and solidify before using.
